Council worker, Derek Stone, leads a solitary life in his tiny flat, above a chip shop, in the coastal town of Crackerley. With nothing but his library books and the sad-man's handshake to keep him amused, there seems to be very little hope for Derek. So when the local librarian befriends him and his infatuation for the busty chip shop owner seems to be returned, Derek's life begins to change dramatically. Will the awkward Derek finally lose his virginity and live the life his mother always dreamt of for him? Or will he be left unwanted and alone?
Deep in countryside, in the village of Suckleberry, surrounded by farms, cliffs and coffee mornings lives Peggy-Ann, a prostitute. Despite her kind heart and generous nature, Peggy is harshly judged by the church going community. Her close relationship with the vicar is scrutinized yet she never has a bad word to say about anyone. When Charlotte asks Peggy to sleep with her husband, Peggy immediately refuses, but Charlotte eventually persuades her otherwise. Will Peggy's strong sense of moral ethics be forgotten? What will become of Charlotte's marriage? And will Peggy-Ann ever find lasting happiness?
